It's a historic day for animals in Canada. Ontario has officially banned invasive medical research on dogs and cats, becoming the first province in the country to do so. The change was passed earlier this month through Bill 75, the Keeping Criminals Behind Bars Act, 2026, which makes major amendments to Ontario's Animals for Research Act.
Animal testing for cosmetics has been banned in Canada since 2023. What Ontario just did goes after the use of dogs and cats in medical and scientific experiments, a practice that has continued in Canadian laboratories for decades with very little public scrutiny.
